DONATING A HORSE
As a horse owner, parting with your beloved friend is one of the toughest decisions you can face. Until now, your options have been to sell or give away your horse, without knowing if he/she would be loved and cared for.
Adoption is a wonderful option, and you've come to the right place! Adopters are not people who buy on impulse or on a whim. They fill out a lengthy application and subject themselves to interviews and possible home visits. As a safeguard, BITS adopters have the option to return their horse if things don't work out. We make every effort to place your horse in a loving home.
To ensure adoptions are successful, we impose restrictions concerning the health and behavior of donated horses. In some cases, we may be able to provide rehabilitation and training to facilitate a horse’s transition to a new career or home.
Please provide photographs of your horse. The photographs along with a description of your horse will be posted on our website to help prospective adopters make their initial selection of a horse.
We carefully screen adopters and make every effort to match the horse and adopter in terms of temperament, training level/riding ability, and interests. Adopters must abide by strict regulations concerning horse care, and we will track the horse for life to ensure the adopters are abiding by these regulations. Please feel free to review the adoption application, the adoption contract, and the regulations for adopters to satisfy yourself that they meet your requirements.
You must indicate whether you want to keep the horse at your facility or move it to our main adoption facility. We do ask for a donation to help care for the horse while awaiting adoption at our facility. You are responsible for transporting the horse to the foster home. It may be possible for BITS to provide transportation to our main facility for a donation towards the transport costs. Please contact us for further details.
The time it will take to find an adoptive home for your horse will vary, depending on the horse and other factors such as the time of year. Obviously, if your horse needs rehabilitation or training it will take longer. Once we have found a match for your horse, we will contact you.
If you indicate on the donation application you would like to be contacted by the adopter, we will give the prospective adopter your name and telephone number.
We would also like to mention we are an officially recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the donation of your horse may be tax deductible. It is recommended that you contact a tax professional for more information about this type of donation.**
We realize the decision to donate a beloved horse is a difficult one. Please think about it carefully before you sign the Donation Application and Donation Contract as they are legally binding.
We look forward to working with you and your horse! Please remember to completely fill out both the Donation Application and Donation Contract before submitting to us. Once we review your application, we will be in touch to help finalize arrangements!
**PLEASE NOTE: BITS DOES NOT PROVIDE APPRAISALS ON HORSES DONATED INTO THE PROGRAM. THIS MUST BE DONE BY A CERTIFIED APPRAISER PRIOR TO DONATION INTO THE BITS PROGRAM!
Please review our Donation Contract below and contact us for any questions/concerns! we are looking forward to working with you in finding your horse a new forever home!
