Our
Program . . . . .
Our Mission . . . . .
Our
Goals . . . . .
Back in the Saddle Horse Adoption, Inc (BITS) is a recognized 501 (c ) (3) non profit organization.
Our facility is located in Linden, Pennsylvania. We have housing for 16 horses in roomy 12x12 stalls, several paddocks, separate quarantine facilities located on site and access to trails.
We are a 100% volunteer organization who spends countless hours of our time to make this program a success and are dedicated in finding new homes and new careers for horses in need.
We regularly travel to auctions or do private rescues. We also accept donations of horses and ponies of any breed from any part of the United States. Each horse or pony is rehabilitated and then is evaluated for soundness, temperament and riding suitability before being placed in a carefully screened adoptive home.
We have successfully placed many horses into new homes throughout the United States.
Each year, thousands of horses are sent to slaughter. In most cases, the owner unknowingly sends their beloved horse off to auction or gives them away because they do not realize they have other choices. Our organization is in place to make people aware they do have a choice. We are able to give horses a second chance at a long life in a new home and we assure the owner that their beloved animal will be loved and cared for instead of facing the horrors of a slaughter house . . . or facing abuse, neglect and cruelty.
Several horses that have come into the program have led amazing careers. As they aged and were unable to continue the heavy work load necessary to continue in their career, they were donated into the program by caring owners who knew their horses would be useful in other aspects of riding. These horses may have needed retraining into a new career, riding limitations or may have needed rehabilitation from an injury. These horses have now been successfully rehabilitated or retrained and are now leading new lives more suited to their capabilities.
We also have a Sanctuary Program that allows the owner to place their horses into the guardianship of our program when they are ready for retirement. We make these horses as comfortable as possible and give them the retirement they have so graciously earned.
Without programs such as ours in place, the owners of these horses had a tough decision to make. Their choices were to have these horses euthanized or give them away to people promising them a good home. In most cases, these horses were loaded into trailers by the people promising good homes and then taken to the closest auction where their fate was most likely a slaughter house.
Back in the Saddle Horse Adoption, Inc. began operations in 2003. When the program first started, we relied heavily on foster homes where donated horses could go and be retrained or rehabilitated until a new adoptive home was found. However, horses entering the program outweighed the number of foster homes available. In December of 2006, Joni and Ted Fink opened the doors of their facility located in Linden, PA. as being the official headquarters of BITS.
Before taking on the task of becoming BITS Headquarters, the couple took on the care of several horses needing sanctuary within the program. These horses were placed back into the program by caring adopters when it was realized they could no longer provide them a home. Due to age or physical limitations, these horses will remain within the guardianship of the program. They all have worked very hard in their lives and are now enjoying the ease of retirement as well as teaching children the joys and care required in horse ownership.
Although we have been very successful thus far in our mission, we have immediate goals. We are in great need of sponsors for both sanctuary horses and other horses within the program. We also are in need of donations in the way of health related items pertaining to the care of the horses, grooming supplies, horse blankets and tack. We believe there is no such thing as to small of a donation. All donations, whether much needed horse related items or monetary, are very much appreciated. Any donation made to our program is tax deductible and we will provide the necessary receipts to those making donations.
Further goals we are reaching for are having seminars to teach the public proper horse management skills. We also plan to hold sessions with certified trainers for those horse owners needing help in overcoming issues in problem horses. These sessions are very valuable for owners of horses that do have training issues. They will learn how to retrain their beloved horse with methods that work instead of having to resort to sending their problem horse off to an auction.
